After extensive googling, I still don't know what this squash-like plant is in my garden! I have had friends over who guessed melons and acorn squash, and my sister found a few similar images online for Mediterranean squash and squash from Central and South America. The above image is a close-up of the fruit, and the one below is taken from atop my kiln shed. I am clueless as to how it ended up in my potato bed. If you have any ideas, please comment. Thanks! BTW, from the main trunk, some of the off-shooting vines are now up to 14' long, and the fruit might be 2" in diameter at this stage.

Now that's a squash!
Or something- does not looks like acorn which usually grows under the leaves on the ground.
It might be a wild squash and some may not be edible, hard for me to tell from the photos, but I had something that grew wild like that on a long vine when I lived in northern california and I remember looking it up at the time to see if it was edible.
indeed a wild squash...

looks to be the same creature you have there.
Tom, take a close up of one of the leaves, and measure it just for the heck of it. Maybe someone can make a better identification of it from the leaf pattern.
Thanks again for your hospitality. Enjoyed my visit!
Stopped at Johnson's and got 1/2 bushel of peaches. Will share with Mullinex, across the street, dad & Jean, and Bart & Peggy. Will let you know if we need more for ice cream next week or not.
Tom, it almost looks like a gourd which is in the squash family. Just another thing to consider.

Tom, I think Wayne is right that it is a gourd. They like to climb so long branches!! Maybe you can make a birdhouse:)
Hi Tom..
Taking a looong shot guess from a photo I seen-http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_zOIrQwlfvEY/RwZVxDV7ROI/AAAAAAAAABM/6wcUbVdrcKo/s320/DSCF2274.JPG..could be a pumpkin..
the white leaves around it look the same...Should have a contest on this one..(is it a boy or girl)lol.)the right guess wins what ever it is..tc Tom
